First Login After Installing Cockpit Print

  • 0

Your first login is the point where you confirm the panel is reachable, your admin credentials work, and the base setup is ready for the next steps such as licensing, settings, and module management.

When to Use This

  • You have just uploaded or installed Cockpit for the first time.
  • You want to confirm the login page is loading correctly before continuing setup.
  • You need to check whether reCAPTCHA is enabled on the login screen.
  • You want a simple checklist for the first successful admin sign-in.

What You Should See

The Cockpit login page includes:

  • a username field
  • a password field
  • a Sign In button
  • a Google reCAPTCHA box if captcha has already been configured

If reCAPTCHA is not configured yet, the login page can still load normally without the captcha widget.

Steps

  1. Open your Cockpit panel URL in a browser.
  2. Wait for the login page to finish loading fully.
  3. Enter your admin username in the Username field.
  4. Enter your password in the Password field.
  5. If a reCAPTCHA box is shown, complete it before clicking Sign In.
  6. Click Sign In.
  7. If 2FA is enabled on the account, complete the second verification step when prompted.

Expected Result

After a successful login, Cockpit should move you away from the login screen and into the main panel. In most cases, your next stop will be the Dashboard or a licensing prompt if the base panel has not been activated yet.

Recommended First Checks After Login

  1. Confirm the sidebar loads correctly.
  2. Open the Dashboard and make sure the page renders without errors.
  3. Open Settings and confirm your account details are visible.
  4. If this is a fresh install, continue with base panel activation.

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong URL: Make sure you are opening the real Cockpit panel URL, not a temporary file manager preview URL.
  • Skipping reCAPTCHA: If the widget is visible, complete it before trying to sign in.
  • Using old credentials: If this is a restored or migrated install, verify you are using the current login details.
  • Assuming 2FA is broken: If you are asked for a verification code, that usually means the password was accepted and 2FA is working as intended.

Example Use Cases

  • Fresh deployment: You upload Cockpit to a new VPS and want to verify the login page works before touching licensing or modules.
  • After moving hosting: You migrated the panel to a new server and want to confirm authentication still works before giving users access again.
  • After enabling reCAPTCHA: You want to confirm the widget appears and does not block valid admin logins.

If Login Does Not Work

  • Check whether the panel is actually asking for a license before normal access.
  • Check whether reCAPTCHA keys were configured correctly.
  • Check whether 2FA is enabled on the account.
  • If you recently restored files, verify the login environment is using the current configuration and not stale data.
