The Settings page gives you a dedicated Account section where you can update your name, avatar, username, and password through separate edit actions.
When to Use This
- You want to update the display name on your Cockpit account.
- You need to change your username or password.
- You want to replace the account avatar.
- You are cleaning up the owner account after installation or handover.
What the Account Section Contains
Inside Settings, the Account section shows separate rows for:
- Name
- Avatar
- Username
- Password
Each row includes its own Edit button so you can change one item at a time.
Steps
- Log in to Cockpit.
- Open Settings.
- Find the Account section.
- Click the Edit button next to the item you want to change.
- Complete the modal or form for that specific field.
- Save the change.
- Confirm the new value appears correctly back in the Account list.
Expected Result
After saving, the updated account value should appear in the Account section and be used by Cockpit from that point forward.
Best Practice
- Change one account item at a time.
- If you change the username or password, test the next login before closing the session everywhere.
- Keep owner credentials current and avoid leaving default or inherited details in place.
Common Mistakes
- Changing both username and password together without testing: It becomes harder to see which part caused a login problem.
- Forgetting the new login details: Record the change securely before logging out.
- Leaving inherited owner details unchanged: Always clean up a panel after takeover or migration.
Example Use Cases
- Post-install cleanup: The owner replaces generic setup details with their real account information.
- Brand polish: A reseller updates the avatar and display name before client-facing demos.
- Credential rotation: The admin changes the password as part of a periodic security routine.
